Treatment For The Narrative of 'Do I Wanna Know'

We chose to follow a narrative structure for our music video as, according to Andrew Goodwin, "music vides are simply an extension of the lyrics", because of this we heavily based our music video around the basis of the lyrics.

"I dreamt about you nearly every night this week
How many secrets can you keep?
Cause there’s this tune I found that makes me think of you somehow
When I play it on repeat
Until I fall asleep
Spilling drinks on my settee"

These lyrics gave us the creative decision to base the narrative around a girl.
Because the lyrics suggest regret we tried to portray arguments between the two in flashbacks, making our music video have a multi-strand narrative.
Our plot is that the protagonist appears to be our main character Matt, who is trying to get over his ex-girlfriend Lydia, he does this by drinking a lot after entering multiple pubs, this is the opening of our music video. With a lot of focus on footsteps and disorderly drinking.
Throughout this sequence we include flashbacks of the arguments, showing Lydia crying and suggesting to the audience that it is Matt actually being the antagonist and ruining his relationship with Lydia.
However it can also be suggested that Lydia has committed to the wrong and that Matt is acting out and getting angry at Lydia for it.
This shows that the perception of the past is determined by the audience's own personal reading, this suggests Barthes' theory that in every text there is more than reading due to their context (polysemic texts).

( Do I wanna Know )
If this feeling floats both ways
( Sad to see you go )
Cause I’ve been hoping that you’d stay
( And now that we both know )
That the nights were mainly made the same
And things that you can’t say some other day

This is the chorus of the song, basing the main outline of our plot.
When reading this we thought it would be good to have Matt wanting Lydia back.
Later after the boys are stumbling about in the street they enter a party, everybody at the party appears to be having a good time apart from Matt.
We use close ups of his expression and his phone to present this.

Later in the party we see that Lydia is at the party and this is represented by having Matt in the background and Lydia in the foreground flirting with another boy.
Matt and Lydia argue after more flirting between Lydia and the other boy.

Do I wanna know
Too busy being yours to fall
Sad to see you go
Ever thought of calling...
Do I wanna know
Do you want me crawling back to you

The last verse is almost like a goodbye and that he has lost the girl.
Showing he now regrets the breakup, because of this we decided the last shot to be of Lydia walking away from the party with the other boy whilst Matt watches them walk away.

Making Of: Poster for AM

This is my original design for the poster of AM:
However after moderation and audience feedback I decided to change my design slightly by keeping with the simple 3 colour scheme but adding more information for my audience.

This is my second and final attempt...

How I made it ...

Drink Shots

Drinks Appearing/Disappearing:

For our A2 advanced portfolio main product of a music video we thought it would be interesting to use some artistic shots and not just of the band. We also realised that it could be beneficial in telling the narrative to our audience.
For this we came up with the idea of using ellipsis for the time passing. To experiment this idea we created this clip of bottles and glasses appearing and disappearing, we thought this would give the impression of the unstable state of our characters, specifically our protagonist. We also thought it would be fun to experiment with the drinks and see what we could do.
I believe this was effective as it shows people arriving at the party, which with the lack of actors we had for the party shots gave the impression of more people than there was. It also represented the beginning and the end of our narrative, as it ends with one bottle alone. This represents our main character, Matt, being alone.

  • We created this shot by filming a very long sequence that was originally 21 minutes of footage. It involved slowly adding, removing and placing drinks in different places to give the impression of movement.
  • Then by using Adobe Premiere CC we were able to cut the one long shot into multiple quick shots and place them together to create the clip here.
  • We did this on a separate file to our music video so we could export it as a whole so we could simply just add the clip into the rest of our music video without destroying the arrangement of the shots.
  • It all went rather smoothly but we realised that it was far too long to have originally as even with cutting it was resulting in being approximately a minute long, taking up 1/4 of our music video time frame.
  • To solve this we sped this clip up using the speed tool, we did this on the music video file so we could compare to the beat of the music and tried to get it to run in time with the drum beat.
Other Drink Shots:

We took many other drink shots in our music video to heavily focus on the idea that these young adults are getting intoxicated, possibly to escape their troubles or just to have a good time.
We thought we'd focus on this because of the stereotypical ideology of British teenagers of drinking, first love and first heartbreak, all of which we are trying to portray in our narrative.

We used Close-Ups and Extreme Close-Ups in a variety of different angles.

We also attempted with shots of pouring drinks, and we used some of spilling drinks. However this was not entirely intentional but when we looked at the clips we thought it would be more iconic to represent the drunken state of the teenagers.

Production Company Logo Design

To look more professional and realistic we knew that we had to make a production studio to do this. We originally thought of the idea of "RobShay Studios" as a combination of mine and my partner's name "Shayler" to try and make it personal.

When it actually came to our finished image we did not think it looked as professional as we had hoped, and it also didn't really have a very good sound to "RobShay Studios"

Our second design was "Glass House Productions" we got this idea from other production companies like Studio Canal and Red Hour Films, which don't appear to have any true meaning to their titles. For our design we used photoshop to crop the image and remove the background. We turned the image grayscale and changed the background to black to make it appear smart. It suits our opening film video too as it is dark as is our video so far.

In the end we decided not to use this as it did not fit in well with our music video, and from what we have investigated I have not seen any uses of film/music video production institutions.

AM Poster: Print Research

The official promo poster for AM is very simple.
It features the band logo, so that people will instantly recognise what the poster is for.
It also features the album artwork in the centre of the poster, this is useful, as it will ensure that anybody who sees the poster will be able to recognise the album in shops.
The rest of the text is in notes form, and not very detailed, this helps to get the point across without going into very much detail.
The small print states the band and record label's websites and the logo.
This poster is very simplistic, yet it is effective at capturing and audience’s attention. It continues the same theme that is seen on the album sleeve and also features the same sound wave line as is seen in the video Do I Wanna Know

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

To see how I used technologies to create my ancillary products please look at my "Making Of" Page, where I explain how I made my ancillary products and some information for parts of the Music Video itself.

The Four Questions for the Media Evaluation

For my A2 Media I decided to choose the first brief; "A promotional package for the release of an album, a music video and two other products, that of a digipak design (I chose to do a 6-panel digipak) and a magazine/newspaper advertisement for this digipak.

For the Evaluation I will be addressing 4 questions:

  • In what way does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?
  • What have you learned from your audience feedback?
  • How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

Do I Wanna Know - Behind The Scenes (Part 1)

Despite all of the stress and hard work of filming, we also had a lot of fun, and ended up with too many out-takes that couldn't go wasted. So I put together these two videos to show the best parts of the filming process that we couldn't include in the final product.

Mise-En-Scene of "Do I Wanna Know"

Mise-En-Scene consists of 5 main aspects, these are:
  • Costume, Hair and Make-Up
  • Lighting and Colour
  • Body Language and Facial Expression
  • Settings and Props
  • Positioning in the Frame

Costume, Hair and Make-Up

The costume in our video is very simple, we chose to dress our characters in casual clothes as if they looked too dressed up they would not compliment the alternative genre. It is common in alternative music videos for the characters to be dressed either very casual, like we chose to do, or to be very quirky or imaginative. Because this is quite a slow song we thought it were best to tone down the outfits and relate to a typical British teenager house party.
Hair is a common aspect in "indie" bands to be wild and different, like their music, this is seen on artists like Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys), Harrison Koisor (Peace) and Sebastian Pringle (Crystal Fighters). Because of this we needed our main character, played by Matthew Brown, to have an interesting hairstyle that makes him stand out from the rest of the crowd, we chose to style his hair in a 1950's, John Travolta, Grease look to try and give him a unique style. Although we filmed in black and white the character is actually still dressed in blacks, greys and whites, this was because it represented his feelings at the time, which we tried to portray as upset and lonely.
As for the female character presented she is wearing a very simple red dress. We originally chose to highlight the dress in red whilst the rest of the video remained black and white, after practicing we realised that this looked unprofessional and did not work with the rest of the footage. Her hair is straight and dark, giving her a look of seriousness and mystery, we thought that this would make the audience want to know more about her.
The rest of the extras and band members are much more casually dressed, mainly fashioning jumpers, jeans and dresses (for the women). We did not want them to be wearing anything too outrageous or it would draw attention away from the main characters. Although the band are seen in the video and are vital for the music video we wanted them to almost appear as "background music" to the narrative as otherwise it would draw the viewers away from the storyline.

Body Language and Facial Expression

The body language of our music video is one of the most important aspects of the mise-en-scene as it is the actor's performance of these paralinguistics that transfers onto the viewer what the characters are really feeling. These expressions tell the story as much as the script, camera and editing does.
For Matthew Brown's character, our protagonist, he is seen to be miserable, lost and lonely, we made sure that he did not smile once in filming to ensure that this image comes across to the audience. We wanted him to appear isolated, even in a room full of people. There are a couple of shots where he is sat alone, away from everybody else, whereas the other characters are celebrating and enjoying themselves.
It is only in the flashbacks that our victim appears to show any other emotion that's not upset, and this is when he is arguing with his newly ex-girlfriend, where he looks angry and appears to be the antagonist of these shots.
Our female lead is a lot more reserved than that of our male, she is calm and also appears to be enjoying herself at the party and appears oblivious that he even exists. This is to represent that she has moved on, even though she was the one who was originally going through the pain in the breakup (when she is crying into her hands in the flashbacks) but now she has emerged happy and it is the male character regretting his decision.
The last shot is of the boy looking on at his ex-girlfiend leaving with another man, this shows him looking upset and full of regret. relating to Todorov's theory of narrative structure as at the end of the music video we have a new equilibrium of the boy being alone and the girl finding somebody new.

Settings and Props

The mise-en-scene of our video at the beginning is the boys walking through a town, we did not want this to look modern but more of a backwards town that you might see on This Is England or Skins, both of which have very similar themes as to what we are trying to attempt.
The setting is a backwards English town, pubs and a teenage party. To set the scene we have the group of boys walking around the town and going into these pubs, appearing slightly drunk and disorderly.
There are not many specific props in the scene. The only ones feature are the band's instuments and the alcohol bottles/cans/glases. For the instruments we mainly displayed them being played by the band, we use close ups of the mic stand and along the guitar to establish a connection between the band and the party. We did a lot of work with the alcohol props as we wanted to make the audience think the characters were drinking a lot, so we used multiple shots of opening bottles and cans, filling glasses up and we used quick shots of the bottles appearring and disappearing off of the table as a montager for time passing throughout the night.
