Brainstorm for Music Video

We wrote down some ideas for our music video, we decided upon the new single, "Do I Wanna Know?" by the Arctic Monkeys.

What is a Digipak?

Digipak's are often in a "book-type" style, special edition digipaks also often come with special notes and pamphlets which come with the album, these often include details to do with the album (where/who produced it etc), it pays credit to the people involved also. They are an alternative to the classic jewel casing which covered CD's before, and are similar to the style of casing that is used for vinyl records.

A digipak is the format for a CD case, it is the front and background that goes into the CD. It can contain the song listings, lyrics, information of the band/compilation and of course contain images.

This source of packaging is often used mostly for special edition albums, four panel digipak's are more likely used in singles rather than a whole album. Digipaks are also used for DVD's however not as often as the CD, the Arctic Monkeys latest album "Suck it and See" use this format however it is very plain and bold.

As they are made mostly of cardboard they can be rather brittle and the teeth of the cover often can rip or become easily worn. However as apposed to jewel casing they are less likely to brake or be smashed/scratched.
A four panel digipak would look like this, it is quite plain and simply opens like a book.

A six panel digipak is a similar idea but usually with more images and information, it is more complex and opens like a leaflet. The CD image also usually reciprocates the images and theme along the digipak.

Suck it and See - Digipak

This is the single "suck it and see" off of the album "Suck it and See" however they are very similar in certain ways.
The name of the single is bold as it is on the denim jacket of one of the drummer from the band (Matt Helders). Because he is swearing it is very eye catching.
This cover links to the album cover as it also contains the logo in the top right corner for Arctic Monkey's.
This EP also has a direct link to the music video that goes with it as this is an image from the music vvideo for the Suck it and See single. These videos and covers are based mainly on Matt Helders which is interesting as Alex Turner is the lead singer which is usually the main focus.

The Arctic Monkey's album cover is very plain however it was nominated for best album cover in the NME awards 2011. The name of this is based on the single "Suck it and See" off of the album.
This is a simple 4-panel digipak, the inside is also very simplistic, the cream background carries on throughout the inside of the album. This simple design is very different as it does not relate to any of the music videos. The song names themselves are also very interesting and are unique "the hellcat spangled shalalala" which are not plain like the rest of the digipak. The digipak has a continuation of capital letters making it stand out.

Arctic Monkeys - NME advertisements

  • This is interesting as Alex Turner has now a "new look" than previous styles. He looks very American and resembles John Travolta in Grease. This could support the biker look that has been achieved in the music video for "suck it and see" and the rest of the music videos in the album.
  • This magazine NME shows the Arctic monkeys to be important as they are highlighted in red and a bigger font than the other artist titles who are name in blue and white. The colours on this page are the same as the American flag.
  • It is very focused on the lead singer, not the rest of the band, as he is centered and his head is in-front of the NME logo.
  • He is holding a record which again makes it look very musical-orientated as we would expect from a music magazine.
  • The background is very plain making the foreground, Alex Turner, stand out more.
  • Head overlaps NME logo - Common thing to be seen on magazine covers
  • Holding a record, in fitting with the magazine covering the topic of "Record Store Day" also seen on the front cover

  • This is another NME magazine cover for the arctic monkeys during the "Suck it and See" release, the fact the magazine released to magazines front covers with the band on shows the release was important.
  • Like the other cover it does have the same colour scheme of red, white and blue, this is again emphasizing that the band was touring in America and the music video theme of "bikers".
  • The headline also read "...on the run with the new-look" this is referencing the biker look as they are all wearing denim jackets like in the video.

Suck it and See - Music Video

This video is a structure of an abusive relationship and it is the first part of a series of music videos that carry on from one another off of the Suck it and See album. Here, we are introduced to Matt Helders (drummer from the arctic monkeys) he appears to be a biker in America on the run.
This music video is very effective for promoting the album as it features the words "Suck it and See" multiple times throughout the clip, it also refers to other songs off of the album

  • The first shot introduces you to the character of Matt Helders (the drummer of the Arctic Monkeys

  • It is already playing up to the typical stereotype of showing the band members in the music video, as it is quite rare when you do not see the artists of the video.

  • This is an effect created with the camera which is interesting as the human eye also can make these lights which gives the effect that this is your eyesight or in the eyes of the character.

  • This is a close up of he main character of the music video, the video as a whole tells a story and this is introducing the audience to the character.
  • The American flag in the background is ymbolic as it gives us an indication of where the music video is set.

  • This shows the freedom of the character presented to us, he seems not threatened and not scared.
  • We see the "biker scene" in this video which is most commonly known in America complimenting the American flag in the last shot.
  • Here we see a relationship between the main character and a girl, this compliments the lyrics within the song "Suck it and See" this suggests that the song is about this girl.
  • This follows on from the last shot and shows the couple again in a mid shot.
  • They use cross cutting between shots as it goes from one scene to another.
  • This shot shows the title of the album and the single playing "Suck it and See".
  • This is also the EP single cover for the rack, this shows that the image has been taken directly from the video showing a clear link between the music video and single

  • They have used a close up on the lighter to show the title again in this shot, this is promoting the entire album as well as just the single.
  • This EP came out before the album so it was a great advertising stunt to gain attraction to the album.

    • This shot of the girl and the gun is interesting as the background has a beige/cream look which could resemble the cover of the digipak for "Suck it and See"
    • This shot is very eye catching because of the gun in the foreground and in more focus then the rest of the scene.
    • The composition is good as the girl is in the centre, drawing us (the audience) to her.

    • This is a very passionate shot which we do not see a lot of throughout the rest of the music video
    • It also contrast to the lack of passion from the digipak

    • The last shot is a medium cllose up of the two characters holding hands showing some compassion in the otherwise abusive relationship.
    • Again the video promotes the album with having "Suck it and See" on the back of the denim jacket.
